A comparative study on the use of different preparations of decapsulated Artemia cysts as food for rearing African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) larvae OMA
Pector, R.; Tackaert, W.; Abelin, P.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) larvae were fed on five preparations of decapsulated Great Salt Lake Artemia cysts: 1) dried (35°C, 6 h) and UV-irradiated cysts; 2) heated cysts (80°C, 10 min); 3) brine dehydrated and UV irradiated cysts; 4) micro-bound diet 1(with intact decapsulated cysts used in diet preparation 1); and 5) micro-bound diet 2 (with crushed and shifted decapsulated diet used in diet preparation 1). The larvae were fed from the first day after yolk-sac resorption (fourth day after hatching). After a 14-d rearing period, larvae fed on dried or heated decapsulated cysts or micro-bound diet 1. Feeding micro-bound diet 2 resulted in a significantly lower average gain in weight as compared to the other...

An improved method for artificial infection of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, with Anguillicola crassus (Nematoda, Dracunculoidea) OMA
De Charleroy, D.; Cannaerts, V.; Augustijn, H.; Grisez, L.; Boon, J.; Ollevier, F.P..
A standardized method was developed for artificially infecting the European eel with Anguillicola crassus, a parasitical swim bladder nematode. For this purpose, an intermediate host, Paracyclops fimbriatus, and a paratenic host, Cyprinus carpio, were used. Parasite prevalence in the artificially infected eels was very high, although there was a large variation in the number of worms per eel. Compared to other methods of artificial infection described in the literature, this method appears to be more efficient ad reliable; there were also more infectious larvae that were recovered and the mortality rate of eels under treatment was lower.

An index of biotic integrity characterizing fish populations and the ecological quality of Flandrian water bodies OMA
Belpaire, C.; Smolders, R.; Vanden Auweele, I.; Ercken, D.; Breine, J.; Van Thuyne, G.; Ollevier, F.P..
A multimetric fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) was composed to assess the biotic integrity of Flandrian water bodies. As fish communities differ substantially between standing waters, running waters of the bream zone and running waters of the barbel zone, eight candidate metrics for each of these water types or zones were identified, representing three major classes of biological attributes. These are species richness and composition, fish condition and abundance, trophic composition. The metrics were tested and modified where needed. The IBI was applied throughout Flanders on 104 locations in standing waters, 500 locations in waters of the bream zone and 257 locations in waters of the barbel zone. Standing waters scored substantially different from...

Application of AFLP for taxonomic and epidemiological studies of Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida OMA
Thyssen, A.; Van Eygen, S.; Hauben, L.; Goris, J.; Swings, J.; Ollevier, F.P..
A collection of 106 Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida strains and 19 Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae strains, including reference and type strains, were genetically characterized using AFLP. The total genomic DNA of each bacterial strain was digested using restriction endonucleases HindIII and TaqI. Using numerical analysis, six clusters were recognized. The largest cluster (n=106) contained the majority of the strains tested and consisted exclusively of Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida. The Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae strains fell...

Comparative serology of the marine fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum OMA
Grisez, L.; Ollevier, F.P..
The different serotyping systems, based on thermostable O antigens, reported for Vibrio anguillarum and V. ordalii were compared by quantitative agglutination, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and subsequent silver staining or Western blotting (immunoblotting) of purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS), using polyclonal rabbit antisera. The results demonstrate that 16 different serotypes within V. anguillarum (designated 01 to 016) can be distinguished. Each of these serotypes is characterized by a distinct polysaccharide banding pattern, as revealed by silver-stained gels of purified LPS. The comparative analysis allowed a complete alignment of the different stereotypes for the...

Comparison of the fatty acid profile of wild caught fingerlings and yolk sac sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae with cultured healthy larvae and larvae suffering from whirling disease OMA
Corneille, S.; Agius, C.; Ollevier, F.P..
Analysis of the fatty acids of total lipids of wild fingerlings (1-4 g) of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) caught off the northcoast of France shows that more than 30% of total fatty acids consists of the two essential fatty acids eiopentaenoic (C20:5 n-3) and docosahaenoic (C22:6 n-3) acids. One- and three-day old yolk sac larvae have even higher amounts of these two important fatty acids (about 40%). On the other hand, laboratory-reared 60-day old larvae had much lower concentrations of C20:5 n-3 (4% of total fatty acids) and C22:6 n-3 (5,5% of total fatty acids). In larvae suffering from whirling or spinning disease the percentage of C20:5 n-3 was only 2,8% and only traces of C22:6 n-3 were found. These results emphasize the...

Ecological approach of macro-fouling prevention and control in cooling systems OMA
Denayer, B.; De Ranter, K.; Van Poele, J.; Ollevier, F.P..
Biofouling is a very frequent and serious problem in the cooling systems of electrical power stations. An investigation is being carried out at the Doel nuclear power station to discover ways of combating micro-fouling. Micro-fouling is combated preventively and curatively using a combination of chlorine, biofilm wetting agent and dispersing agent. This treatment removes the slime layer, which can act as a primary attachment point for macro-organisms.In the study of the macro-fouling in the cooling circuits, a monitoring method was developed which uses artificial substrates to provide direct data on the colonization and growth of these organisms. On the basis of the data obtained, the treatment frequency for the prevention or combating of biofouling was...

Efficacy of some anthelmintics against the swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus of eel Anguilla anguilla under saltwater conditions OMA
Geets, A.; Liewes, E.W.; Ollevier, F.P..
Six anthelmintic drugs, Ivermectin, Closantel, Safewormer, Masoten, Oxfendazole and L-Levamisol·HCL were screened for their efficacy against Anguillicola crassus, a swimbladder nematode of European eel Anguilla anguilla. All experiments were carried out under saltwater conditions. Of the 6 drugs, L-Levamisole·HCL used in a bath treatment gave the most promising results. Evaluation of the curative dose of L-Levamisole·HCL showed that a long-term treatment (24h). Dosages lower than 20 mg 1-1 showed a lower efficacy against Anguillicola crassus. However, even with a long-term, high-dosage treatment, some recovery of adult nematodes with sublethal damage and/or migration of viable...

Endoparasitic helminths of the whitespotted rabbitfish (Siganus sutor (Valenciennes, 1835)) of the Kenyan coast: distribution within the host population and microhabitat use OMA
Geets, A.; Ollevier, F.P..
The parasitic fauna of the alimentary tract of adult whitespotted rabbitfish, Siganus sutor, sampled in December 1990 at the Kenyan coast, was investigated. Five endoparasites were found: the digenean trematodes Opisthogonoporoides hanumanthai, Gyliauchen papillatus and Hexangium sigani, the acanthocephalan Sclerocollum rubrimaris and the nematode Procammalanus elatensis. No uninfected fish, nor single species infections occurred. Parasite population data showed very high prevalences for all endoparasites, ranging from 68.18% to 100%. G. papillatus occurred with the highest mean intensity, 201.68 ± 12.54 parasites per infected fish. Experimentally induced infections of European eel Anguilla anguilla with Anguillicola crassus (Nematoda, Dracunculoidea) and subsequent migration of larvae OMA
Haenen, O.L.M.; Grisez, L.; De Charleroy, D.; Belpaire, C.; Ollevier, F.P..
Migration patterns of third-stage Anguillicola crassus larvae, and pathogenesis of the lesions induced by third-stage larvae, was investigated in European eel Anguilla anguilla L. Young elvers (1g) were fed infected Paracyclops fimbriatus (Copepoda). Eel samples were collected and examined histologically at varying intervals during 6 mo post-infection period. Third-stage larvae (L-III) migrated directly through the intestinal wall and body cavity to the swimbladder within 17h post-infection. L-IV larvae were detected 3 mo post-infection, and immature adults were detected within 4 mo post-infection. The parasites occasionally showed aberrant migration paths. Pathological effects caused by the parasite...

Extended serotyping scheme for Vibrio anguillarum with the definition and characterization of seven provisional O-serogroups OMA
Pedersen, K.; Grisez, L.; van Houdt, R.; Tiainen, T.; Ollevier, F.P.; Larsen, J.L..
The present paper summarizes the serotyping scheme of the fish pathogenic bacterium Vibrio anguillarum and defines seven additional O-serogroups. Strains, collected in our laboratories that were nontypable with antisera against the previously defined 16 O-serotypes, were used for generating new antisera and were characterized further by means of LPS profiles, Western blots, and serological reactions. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that the seven new O-serogroups are to be included in the existing serotyping system as serotypes O17-O23. However, the existence of further V. anguillarum strains that were not typable with any of the 23 O-antisera suggested the existence of additional...

Fish species of the lower Zeeschelde (Belgium): a comparison with historical checklists OMA
Van Damme, P.A.; Hostens, K.; Ollevier, F.P..
In the 19th century approximately 40 fish species (excluding freshwater species) were recorded in the lower Zeeschelde between the Dutch/Belgian border and Antwerpen. In comparison with the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century the total number of fish species in the Beneden-Zeeschelde has decreased considerably. The present checklist (1991-1993) of fishes of the lower Zeeschelde (excluding freshwater species) contains only 26 species. The fish community is composed of marine species (13), catadromous species (3), estaurine residents (9) and one anadromous fish species. Besides, 6 freshwater fis species have presently been recorded. The distribution of diadromous fishes, estaurine residents and freshwater fishes is probably greately affected...

Hatching, survival, activity and penetration efficiency of second-stage larvae of Anguillicola crassus (Nematoda) OMA
Thomas, K.M.; Ollevier, F.P..
Hatching of eggs of Anguillicola crassus was studied at temperatures between 5 and 30°C. Hatching occurred between 10 and 30°C and the incubation time was inversely related to temperature. Survival, spontaneous and excitatory rate of activity of 2nd-stage larvae of A. crassus were also affected by temperature. The percentage of larvae eaten by Paracyclops fimbriatus was not always influenced by the activity of the larvae. Penetration efficiency into the haemocoel of the intermediate host was highest for freshly hatched larvae and declined gradually with age. Completely non-active larvae were still able to penetrate, although penetration efficiency was lower.

Mode of infection and spread of Vibrio anguillarum in turbot Scophthalmus maximus larvae after oral challenge through life feed OMA
Grisez, L.; Chair, M.; Sorgeloos, P.; Ollevier, F.P..
The infection route of the marine fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum was studied after oral challenge of the juvenile turbot Scophthalmus maximus L. through a life feed. Artemia nauplii were incubated in a suspension of V. anguillarum cells, and subsequently fed twice to the fish. All challenged fish died within 4d after the first challenge, while no mortality occurred in the non-challenged controls. The results of an immunohistochemical examination of the sectioned fish samples clearly demonstrated that V. anguillarum cells were ingested by the Artemia and that the latter were ingested by the fish. Bacteria were released from the...

Palatability enhancing nutrients for the European eel, Anguilla anguilla L. OMA
Pacolet, W.; Reynders, K.; Ollevier, F.P..
Feeding experiments with European glass eels Anguilla anguilla L. demonstrated a high degree of attractiveness for the natural diets Tubifix and cod roe. Previous experiments had indicated that incorporation of bovine spleen and/or blood into paste feeds significantly improved the growth rate and survival. To increase feed consumption, the effect of some basic components available from the current generation of chemo-attractants were evaluated. Using a modified Omission Test Procedure, we focused on monosodiumglutamate, betaine, the nucleotides IMP and GMP, and fractions of cattle blood. These components were incorporated into non-attractive casein-based test diets and administered following standardized procedures to intensively...
